A lone figure made his way across the rolling fields below the clouds, the long grasses reaching up and brushing against his legs as he walked through them. His dark teal wings rustled in the breeze and he carried a pack of makeshift supplies over his shoulder and his lips were pursed with something between concentration and boredom. He sighed as he went on his way, unsure of his destination, only knowing he didn’t feel like staying in the same place for too long. Being unable to fly irritated him to no end, but he figured it was best just to do the best he could by walking.
He stopped as some sense of brief dread washed over him. He looked up curiously, shielding his crimson eyes from the sun, and found a streak of black and white flashing across the sky, and it landed on the edge of his vision. Frantic, he picked up his pace and hurried as best he could, stumbling through the grass and over rocks in his path. He pulled one of the blades of his Silver Bow from his belt on a whim of caution.
By the time he reached the source of the streak, he was panting and sweaty, his face flushed. His heart pounded as he carefully approached it and scanned his gaze over its features. It certainly was a creature of black and white: though it garbed itself in white robes, it had wings black as midnight- darker even than his, like the deepest shadow or a moonless night with no stars. He swallowed his fear and stepped closer to it, his steps light and ready to spring.
On closer inspection, his feeling of dread returned as he observed the features of this creature. At first, it didn’t appear to be moving, but after a moment, he realized it was breathing and even seemed to be shaking. When the wind died down and he held his breath, he heard something that sounded like sobbing. He bit his lip and knelt down, his heart hammering in his chest at the sight of a patch of thick, tousled brown hair.
    It was impossible.
    Wasn’t it?
The red-eyed angel crept closer and frowned as he rested his hand on the creature’s shoulder, his mind refusing to come to terms with even the possibility. But yet, here he was, crumpled face down in the dirt, trembling as the black wings on his back twitched. It took him several moments to find his voice.
“P-Pit?” he finally stammered, and the brown-haired boy visibly clenched his muscles. “Gods, Pit, what happened to you?” The boy on the ground peeked out hesitantly, his blue eyes wide and shimmering with terror. The red-eyed angel’s expression softened, though his heart still beat harshly in his chest. “Are you okay?” Pit stared at him with one eye peeked out for moments that felt like years. Then, out of nowhere, he sprung up and clung to his darker twin desperately, burying his face in the red-eyed angel’s shoulder and sobbing almost violently.
“P-Pittoo...” he blubbered as Dark Pit stared blankly at the air in front of him, shifting awkwardly before he finally broke down and returned his twin’s embrace. His gaze strayed back to the unbelievable wings the lighter angel now had, their black feathers rustling.
“Okay, okay,” Dark Pit finally sighed and pulled Pit back, who sat back with a flop and looked down at the dirt, and he studied his twin’s face to assure it really was him. “Pit? You okay? What happened?” But Pit said nothing as he sat there, but instead pulled his knees up tight against his chest and rocked back and forth slightly. “Are you okay?” Dark Pit asked again, but again received no answer. “Are you hurt?” Pit shook his head gently, but remained silent as stone. “What happened?” Nothing.
Dark Pit let out a huff of frustration and brushed his black bangs back. “Did something happen in Skyworld? Where’s Palutena?” Pit’s muscles again clenched and terror filled his eyes again, but he still did not speak. “We should talk to her.” The dark angel got back to his feet and offered his hand to his twin. “Whatever happened to you... She can probably fix it, right?” Pit let out something that sounded like a whine or a grunt- but whatever it was, it was a sound of agony. “Is... she okay?” Pit shook his head again, and Dark Pit swallowed. “Okay... What happened?”
At the repeat of the question, Pit buried his face in his knees, now effectively curled into a ball that couldn’t quite settle to a stop. Dark Pit let out a quick breath of concern, and he swallowed again as his mind again tried to fight back against even the thought that... this hadn’t been an accident. He knelt down again in front of his twin, concerned with the beginnings of grief forming in his heart for reasons he couldn’t place.
“Pit... What did you do?” he asked, and Pit grunted in protest as he gripped his head and covered his ears with his wrists. Dark Pit, alarmed, grabbed his shoulders and stared into his eyes as guilt etched itself over Pit’s face. “What did you DO?!” he demanded in a louder and harsher tone.
Pit yelled out wordlessly and shoved his twin back, and Dark Pit stumbled and landed on the ground a pace or two away as he stared at Pit in shock. The blue-eyed angel only watched him in fear, guilt now evident in his features as he panted, water dripping down his cheeks. He curled himself back into a ball and rolled over on his side, his black wings twitching as he shook and trembled.
Just a bit of hot-off-the-press writing centering around another idea I have. Let me know what thoughts you have!
